Warhawk Air Museum | Nampa, IdahoThe Warhawk Air Museum is located in Nampa, Idaho just outside of Boise. The Museum began as a World War II Museum featuring its famous Warhawk and Kittyhawk P-40's, since then its collection has expanded to include other planes from WWII, Korea, and even a Vietnam Huey Helicopter. But the planes are not the only thing on display at the Warhawk, the collections of wartime memorabilia and personal effects from the soldiers (and citizens) who served and supported the war effort are priceless. A recent expansion has added a new wing for the further growth of collections from Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan- and provide more room for WWI and WWII in the original wing.

Perhaps the greatest attribute of the Warhawk however is not its collections at all, but the people who actively make it a "Living History Museum", such as the WWII and Korean War Veterans who regularly speak to groups of students in a project called "Bridging the Generations". In conjunction with the Library of Congress, the Warhawk has filmed the oral histories of hundreds of WWII Veterans for preservation as part of the Veterans History Project, and has expanded this effort into the wars that followed WWII as well.

This virtual tour is a sample of what can be experienced at the Warhawk, but nothing compares to a visit in person. If you go, and happen to bump into a Pearl Harbor survivor, a B-17 Pilot, or an Iwo Jima Leatherneck, don't forget to thank them for your freedom- and for helping the Museum pass on this knowledge to both new and future generations.

Devil's Thumb RanchDevil's Thumb Ranch is the premiere Nordic Center for cross-country skiing in Colorado, featuring more than 100km of groomed trails on over 5,000 wild acres that include the beautiful and private Ranch Creek Valley, and many of the trails are lit for night skiing. Situated at the base of the Continental Divide, Devil's Thumb Ranch features immaculate lodging options with a thoughtful collection of artwork and rugs complementing the natural wood doors, hand textured lodgepole pine beams, and marvelous stonework throughout the Lodge, Cabins, and Spa. Devil's Thumb Ranch practices green efforts across the property such as using beetle-kill wood from standing-dead forests and rocks recovered from landslides in the construction of the Ranch.  These efforts add to its handmade rustic charm.

Dining options include Heck's- which is modeled after the Timberline Lodge in Oregon and the Ranch House Restaurant & Saloon. Both have warm environments and use locally grown (when possible) organic vegetables and humanely raised meats, with seafood flown in daily. Some menu items include Venison, Bison, Elk, Pheasant, Halibut, Duck, and everything is prepared to perfection. With the extensive Ranch Creek Spa on site, no day of skiing, snowshoeing, or skijoring with your dog must go unrewarded without a visit.

Devil's Thumb Ranch is 10 minutes away from the mogul pocked face of Winter Park Ski Area, and just over an hour from Rocky Mountain National Park to the North and Denver to the East.

California State Park | Oceano Dunes Rising up from the Pacific Ocean just south of Pismo Beach, California is the Oceano Dunes District, a vast area of constantly moving sand dunes that are a recreation ground zero for several extreme beach and off-road sports. Many of the dune areas such as Pismo Dunes State Preserve are environmentally protected and off-limits to recreational use. For the parts that are open to off-road vehicles, there may not be anything like this anywhere else. Camping is allowed at the California State Park, and visitors often ride all through the night on the tall dunes overlooking the ocean- visibility permitting.

The gentle crescent shaped beach with its wild waves coming in to the long sandy beach dunes are a magnet for kite-surfers, jet skiers and other watercraft sports enthusiasts, and it looks like everyone's dogs are having a great time too. ATV rentals are available at the entrances to the park, and keep an eye out for some of the amazing dune buggies that rumble past from time to time. Regal reminds you to be safe and learn the rules before playing in the dunes, but chalk this one up as a 'must-do'.
